Candice Royal studied medicine at the University of Cape Town, where she graduated cum laude with multiple subject prizes including family practice and dermatology. Candice fulfilled her dream by specializing in paediatrics and later by sub-specialising in allergology after a two-year fellowship at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. This gave her exposure to allergic disorders referred from all over Cape Town, the province and even across Africa.
Candice is a part-time consultant at Red Cross and has, in 2018, embarked in a training program which seeks to equip healthcare practitioners (nurses, pharmacists and doctors) across the country to manage allergic disorders with knowledge and evidence-based management tools. Candice maintains involvement with UCT as a paediatric lecturer and serves as an examiner for the College of Medicine South Africa for Allergology.
Candice believes in remaining up to date in the rapidly developing field of allergology. She keeps herself involved in the academic aspects of UCT Paediatric Allergy. She has been published in journal articles and is an invited speaker at many national events. Candice believes whole-heartedly in education, research and learning and her primary goal is to provide her patients with state of the art care.
Candice is married to Justin Howlett, Consultant Urologist at Groote Schuur Hospital and UCT Private Academic Hospital. Together they have prioritized the art of medicine and the immense privilege of caring for patients as a life-time prerogative.
They are blessed with two children; Sienna and Rourke, who continue to challenge, amaze and grow them. Candice is an avid runner; best fashioned in running shoes and found on the trails or a long-distance road race.
She firmly believes in an holistic approach to healthcare and in an interactive and collaborative patient experience.
